Washington State Votes for Liberty?

|
November 7, 2012

The ballot initiatives voted by Washington State voters in 2012 are the brightest light for increased liberty in the current election.

Voters in Washington State approved a super-majority requirement for future tax increases: now tax increases need a 2/3 majority in the legislature, or a majority of popular vote. This is an issue that has legs in Washington State as a similar previous initiatiive has faced court challenges. Hopefully, this will settle the issue and put real brakes on the growth of government.

Meanwhile, voters there also have approved the legalization of general marijuana use, striking the strongest blow in years against the war on drugs. And they have also approved gay marriage.

Together, these three constitute a trifecta for individual freedom and suggest the prospect of a small-government liberalism.
